They are high in fiber but low in calories, which makes for a fresh snack that promotes a healthy gut and helps regulate your digestive system. The health benefits of Solar Flare tomatoes are endless!
Growing Your Own
Developed by Wild Boar Farms, Solar Flare tomatoes are an heirloom variety that produces high yields.
Growing these tomatoes is easy! They are open-pollinated, which means birds and insects pollinate them.
The plant is hardy even in challenging climates, scab resistant, and produces fruit early in the season.
Solar Flare tomatoes can be started inside or outside.
Starting Indoors
For starting inside, plant your seeds around six weeks before the last frost. Two to three seeds can be sowed per pot. They should be planted in fertile soil amended with compost and much to provide even moisture.
When tomato seedlings get a third set of leaves, they should be transplanted into their own pot.
For starting outside, wait until the threat of frost has ended before planting your seeds in the same mixture of fertile soil, compost, and mulch.
Solar Flare tomato seedlings should be fertilized every seven to ten days with a water-soluble fertilizer diluted to about one-fourth of the suggested measurement. Check out our tomato fertilizer guide for more instructions and product recommendations.
Once your tomato plants are ready for transplanting into the ground, they should be spaced around 24-36″ apart.
This tomato plant variety produces heavy fruit and will require some support to stay upright.
Tomato cages are the most common support used for tomato plants, but you can also use garden stakes and twine ties to help support the heavy weight of the fruits.
Potential Pests and Disease
Tomatoes are part of the nightshade family, which tends to be susceptible to blossom end rot due to calcium deficiencies.
To prevent blossom end rot in your tomato plants, sprinkle pelleted gypsum around the base of the plant when it is blooming.
Tomato plants attract a variety of pests, such as aphids, spider mites, and tomato hornworms. An insecticide containing neem oil is the best defense against these pests.
Where to Buy Seeds
As with purchasing any seeds to grow in your garden, be sure you buy tomato seeds from a reputable source. We highly recommend the Solar Flare seeds sold online by one of our favorite seed retailers, Hoss Tools.
Some local nurseries or co-ops may also carry seedlings for transplant. Be sure to check those out if you want to skip growing these tomatoes from seed and jump right into transplanting seedlings into the ground.
