Different Types of Women’s Gardening Shoes

Generally, the best gardening shoes for women come in two basic categories–boots and clogs.

Almost by definition, boots are tough, durable, and built with hard work in mind. That alone makes them suitable as garden shoes for women.

With their rubber or plastic outer materials, rain boots in particular are optimal for gardening. They allow you to work with mud, damp soil, and water without worrying that your feet will get wet and cold, which could lead to a variety of foot diseases. Rain boots can reach anywhere from your ankle to your knees as long as they keep your feet snug, warm, and dry.

Clogs were originally invented and normalized in northern countries, especially the Netherlands, to protect the wearers’ feet from the cold and germ-infested mud.

At first, they were made almost entirely of wood, then only the insoles were expected to be wooden. Nowadays, clogs refer to shoes consisting of two or three sturdy, rigid soles that cover the foot. The purpose remains the same, though the style has changed.

Considering how often you come into contact with soil, water, and mud in all kinds of weather, gardening is precisely the type of activity for which clogs are meant to be used.

How Can You Determine the Best Gardening Shoes for Women?

As with any shoe, you must like the size, fit, and design of the pair you use for gardening so that you can feel comfortable and avoid hurting your feet. However, the best gardening shoes for women will take meet a few more criteria that are equally important.

Water Resistance

Since gardening often requires working with water, mud, and damp soil, it’s essential that your shoes can withstand large volumes of moisture without being ruined or letting your feet get wet. You should prioritize shoes that are fashioned from any of the numerous waterproof materials currently available.

Plastic is an obvious and popular choice. Rubber, whether traditional or neoprene, is another. However, you could also consider wool, laminated cotton, thermoplastic polyurethane, synthetic leather, or Gore-Tex fabric.

Whatever material you prefer, remember that your feet also need oxygen so that your skin cells can regenerate and fight bacteria. Gardening is hard work and sure to make your feet sweaty, especially since water-resistant materials retain heat.

Although your shoes should cover your feet entirely, check that they also include small holes, mesh lining, or waterproof membrane to encourage airflow.

It’s inevitable that dirt and other contaminants will get on your gardening shoes, but you shouldn’t leave them soiled. The material and construction will wear down faster, and they’re more likely to spread or breed germs.

You need shoes that you can confidently hose down, wipe off, or throw into a washing machine without harming the material. Leather, plastic, and rubber are the easiest to clean, as they’ll absorb very little of the gray water you’ll generate.
