Sweet Cinnamon Apple Dump Cake With A Crunchy Pecan Topping
So you may or may not be asking yourself, what is a dump cake? A dump cake is where you take either fresh fruits or pie filling then dump a bag of store-bought cake mix on top, hence the dump cake part. It is a super easy recipe that takes a plain ol’ box cake and makes it into something different, a little more unique, a little tastier.
5 Ingredients, Super Easy
I love when you can toss together something amazing with minimal ingredients. This recipe will look as if you spent hours in the kitchen baking away when really it takes 10 minutes to put this apple dump cake together and toss it in the oven.
So here are those super easy 5 ingredients I used for this dump cake.
Canned Apple Pie Filling
I picked up a can of apple pie filling at my local grocery store for $1.99, you want to make sure you get the larger can, 21 oz. or so so you can get more of the gooey apple filling.
Yellow Box Cake Mix
Once again at my local grocery store, I grabbed a box of plain yellow cake mix, you could also use butter cake mix as well for this recipe both would work perfectly!
Apple Sauce
I used some cinnamon apple sauce that I had in my fridge to add a little more moisture to the apple pie filling that way our cake topping will cook up nice and fluffy. You could also make your own apple sauce using one of my other recipes which you can find here.
Butter
That’s right, what’s a dessert recipe without butter? It gives this such a rich amazing flavor that will go perfect with a coffee or tea.
Pecans
Last but not least is pecans. I added some chopped pecans to the top of my apple dump cake before baking, it adds a nice change in texture to the cake and has such a nutty delicious crunch. Now, you could always leave off the pecans for those who do not care for them or have a nut allergy.
How To Make Apple Dump Cake – Step By Step
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Butter a 9×7 baking dish so that your dump cake will come out nice and clean. I love this pyrex dish that I purchased a while back because it came with a lid, all of my dump cakes go in here because it’s so perfect to just toss in the fridge for a scoop later! Here is the one I have been using.
- Add in your apple pie mix and applesauce and give it a quick mix.
- Once you have your apple pie and apple sauce mixture in an even layer on the bottom of your baking dish it is time to add the box cake mix.
- Now you don’t prepare the cake mix at all all you do is open the bag and dump the dry mix on top.
- After you have the dry mix on top in an even layer pour your melted butter right on top.
- Using a butter knife swirl around the top of your apple dump cake to make sure some of the gooey warm butter makes its way all around the dish.
- MAKE SURE not to over-mix you don’t want to over mix this or you won’t get that crispy topping that we are looking for that is oh so yummy.
- The only thing left to do is add your pecans to the top! I just had some pecan halfs in my pantry and gave them a quick crush to make them into smaller peices but you could always just purchase chopped pecans to make it easier.
- Once you have your pecan topping toss you cake into the oven for about 45-55 minutes untill your topping is golden and the filling is bubbly hot.
- Make sure to serve this dessert warm, its also great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or caramel topping!
