Apples and Weight Loss

Obesity remains on the rise in America despite our best efforts.  We are now looking at two thirds of our population as overweight and one third being considered obese. According to the Centers for Disease Control Minnesota ranked at 24.6% obesity rate for the state. Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancers, and type 2 diabetes. Obesity is measured by the body mass index (BMI); a person with a BMI of 30 or higher is diagnosed as obese.  It is important to note that BMI does not take into consideration body fat percent.

Hurray for apples as they have been identified to help with weight loss. Apples are a delicious source of dietary fiber which helps aids in digestion and blood sugar fluctuations and post meal satiety.  Fiber is a carbohydrate but it doesn’t have any calories and is not digestible.  Adding fiber to your diet helps fill you up and leaves you satisfied longer.

Researchers from the State University of Rio de Janeiro found that women who ate just 3 small apples a day lost significantly more weight on a low-calorie diet than women who didn’t add fruit to their diet.  In addition, they found the women who ate fruit naturally at fewer calories. Likewise there was a diet that came out of Washington State called the 3-Apple-A-Day Diet that promoted eating 3 apples a day preferably before meals.  The author tested out the diet that was otherwise balanced and not restrictive and added exercise on her overweight clients at the gym.  The average weight-loss among clients was 17 pounds.  We have you covered here at Minnetonka Orchards with an abundance of apples.
